If you are one of those people who like to chill on the beach while sipping on a Margarita, you won’t find yourself being called a ski bum or snow bum but at least you will find out what that means. If nature’s call is your guide in life and a little bit of cold doesn’t scare you then you can almost qualify for a ski bum title. What is exactly a ski bum? It is a person, usually skier or snowboarder looking to spend as much time on the runs as possible. Average people ski or ride during their vacation, meaning a maximum 7 days per year. If you go crazy about winter sports that is not acceptable; when what’s the solution? Here’ where winter resorts found a way of having pretty cheap labor and make the ski bums happy at the same time. So when the season starts herds of skiers or riders head to the mountain resorts and get a job there; usually this job doesn’t pay too well but has another benefits to the employees, like free ski passes for the entire season, at least 2 days of per week, employee housing and so on. In this way resorts are happy to pay less for the labor and ski bums have their way on the mountain all season. There is a down side to this also; work is usually seasonal, and at the end of the season when the resorts shuts down, ski bums need to find another job, or move to another resort on the other hemisphere, where the season has just opened. In the past years another fact has being playing tricks on snow sports enthusiasts and resorts as well: you probably guesses it, it’s global warming. The seasons are getting shorter, and places might lack of snow in periods where it used to be powder heaven. There might be snow in very unusual places which normally don’t get it at all, so will see where the winter sports industry will take us in the future.
Until then, have fun on the runs, be safe, an if you want to live on the mountain and improve your skiing or riding skills remember you are just one phone call or email away; the winter resorts will be more than happy to hire winter sports enthusiasts.
