Passion for the Passion Fruit

The passion fruit also known as maracuja in some parts of the world is available in two varieties. The two species of passion fruits are the purple passion fruit and the yellow passion fruit.

The passion fruit- or the Passilflora edulis in Latin is a delicious fruit with a strong aroma. The name of this fruit derives form the Passions of Christ and the fact that the plant of the passion fruit has a distinctive form which could be interpreted as symbols of the thorn crown, the nails and the wounds of Christ. The passion fruit is edible, and may be consumed raw, but it may also be prepared in a lovely passion fruit pie or in a great cocktail of passion fruit juice. The passion fruit juice is very savory, and it is easy to obtain, due to the fact that the passion fruit is a very succulent fruit. The Brazilians and the Portuguese people call the passion fruit the maracuja. As a matter of fact, the passion fruit or the maracuja has its origins in Brazil, being spread in other subtropical regions afterwards.

The passion fruit may be cultivated in warm subtropical climates, which help the fruit develop and ripe. Some people cultivate the passion fruit for the passion fruit juice, some grow it for the fruit itself. The passion fruit is excellent in cake recipes, cheesecake, ice cream, as cake toppings, as syrup and in many cocktails. The passion fruit juice may be added to different recipes of cocktails, or even the passion flower may adorn some special cocktails, due to its attention-grabbing aspect.

In alternative medicine, the roots and the flowers and plants are used for healing different ailments. The passion fruit and the plant is believed to help hypertension and lower the blood pressure.

You have to know that the skin of the purple passion fruit may be toxic, so avoid eating it. The skin of the passion fruit contains cyanide. However, the skin is used when making jam or jelly out of the passion fruit, as the cyanides will vanish at the boiling temperature.

All in all, the passion fruit is a unique fruit and the passion flower plant is out of the ordinary as well. So, eat passion fruits for a unique experience, or drink passion fruit juice. Prepare for a delight for the senses, which will develop a passion for the passion fruit.
