The peppers are widely used in cooking and are also a grand source of vitamin C. learn more about this wonder vegetable, available in a variety of colors and shapes.

The peppers are friendly vegetables that belong to the Capsicum annum species. The name of peppers was given by Christopher Columbus himself, when he imported the plant to Europe. The term pepper is widely used, however the term capsicum is also uttered by people in New Zeeland, Australia or India. There are many varieties of peppers, including the bell peppers, the hot peppers, the sweet peppers and lots others. The difference between the hot peppers and those that are not hot (the bell peppers for instance) is the fact that in the hot peppers there is a substance called capsaicin, which gives it the specific spicy taste, which may be light or utterly hot. The peppers may be found in diverse colors such as green, yellow, red or orange.

The peppers have a nutritional value of 20 calories per 100 grams, which is very low, so this vegetable is highly recommended in low calorie diets and not only those. The green and yellow peppers may have even less calories, while the red may contain an insignificantly higher amount of calories. Aside from the fact that the peppers are poor in calories, they contain also an amazing amount of vitamin C. Did you know that 100 grams of peppers contain more than 100% of the amount of vitamin C recommended for one day? So, eating just a few bites of peppers can give your body the needed amount of vitamin C. apart form the vitamin C, the peppers also contain a lot of protein- around 86 grams per 100 grams of peppers. There are also traces of calcium, vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B9, plus some iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc.

The spice which is made of the hot peppers is called paprika, and it is a highly valued spice in hot cuisine such as Hungarian cuisine, Brazilian cuisine and others. the bell peppers are also great in raw salads or in some recipes of mushrooms.

Beware of the hot peppers! They are really hot and will make your mouth totally numb. Opt for the bell peppers for a less exciting experience for your senses, but all in all, the peppers have many benefits in stock for you, and almost no calories at all.
