Procrastination is easy. It’s easier to let things from one day to the other than dealing with them on the spot. But this can give you head aches the next day, so it is better to overcome procrastination and to avoid the possible delays in your work and life in general.
Procrastination is a phenomenon that is often very tempting. Sometimes you prefer to do anything but your work or daily tasks. The causes of procrastination are multiple: either you find the task difficult, not rewarding enough or you feel that you don’t know how to start doing it, so you get stuck in doing other things that you know how to do, or you do some more pleasurable activities.
As you have seen, there are many causes of procrastination, but you can overcome procrastination if you make a plan. First of all, you have to create a mental schedule. You have to say: today I have to do that and that and to know your priorities; make a list on which you rank your tasks according to their priorities. Write down the required time for each task, and add some extra time as well. You have to remember that you will have a great feeling once you accomplish a thing that you have planned to do. When you are tempted by procrastination, think about the good feeling you have when you accomplish a planned task.
Next, you should know that a well organized desk will help you focus on your tasks. If your desk is chaotic, you will end up looking for things and you will also be bothered by the mess.
Once you have a well organized desk, organize the windows on your computer. Don’t leave every program that you use at some point running. When you are done using a program simply close it.
Start doing your tasks. Never think about the difficulty of each task. Focus on the result, and do the tasks as you can. Make the first draft using all that comes to mind, and then take some time to revise it. In the first draft, make sure you underline the things that you will need to alter. You will surely get more things done that thinking about procrastination.
Take a break. After having worked for 50 minutes, you can afford a break. Get away from your desk and your computer and do something that is not related to work. You will come back with more energy and procrastination will be off your list.
