Vitamin C and its Antioxidant Benefits

Vitamin C is an essential vitamin that helps the metabolism, being a rich source of antioxidants. Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid and helps people to fight the oxidative stress.

The need of vitamin C of the human organism is limited to an amount of 2 grams per day. The minimum requirements of vitamin C are of at least 90 milligrams. However, these figures are still in discussion. Anyway, it is highly important that you include in your daily diet a few vitamin C foods.

The most important vitamin C foods that contain a high amount of vitamin C are: oranges, the green pepper, green leaf vegetables, oranges, lemons, tomatoes, strawberries, broccoli, sweet potatoes, kiwi and others. As a result, analyze your diet and see if you eat enough vitamin C per day.

On the other hand, vitamin C or ascorbic acid may be found as a supplement, and does not need a prescription. So, if you consider that your diet is poor in vitamin C foods, you can compensate with some vitamin C supplements. However, it is a good idea to talk to your physician first, in order to get the right dosage of vitamin C supplements and to avoid the side effects that vitamin C may have. You have to be aware of the fact that a high dosage of vitamin C may cause indigestion, nausea, vomiting, headaches or flushing on the face.

The vitamin C deficiencies may cause scurvy and avitaminosis- the former being even fatal, but these conditions may be avoided by consuming enough vitamin C foods and using the benefits of vitamin C on a daily basis.

Having filled in with all these facts on vitamin C also known as the ascorbic acid, you know what to eat or what to do in order to maintain your health and to have a balanced diet.
