The Mercedes Benz E-Class was awarded the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 IQS Award for "Highest Ranked Midsize Premium Car in Initial Quality." The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a popular favorite in the luxury sport sedan segment, providing solid qualities, athletic driving dynamics, safety and luxury features. The 2008 Mercedes-Benz E-Class comes in two body styles: a midsize sedan or wagon, with a choice of four engines and two drivetrains. The E-Class comes in four trim levels: the E320 Bluetec sedan only, the E350 (sedan and wagon), the E550 sedan, and the high-performance E63 AMG (sedan and wagon). The E350 and E550 are available with 4Matic all-wheel drive.
The E350 is equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 268 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is noted to be 17/24 mpg (city / highway). The E550 receives a 5.5-liter V8 that makes 382 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque, with fuel economy at 15/22 mpg (city/highway) on the rear-wheel-drive model. The E320 Bluetec is powered by a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 rated for 210 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque and fuel economy is much better at 23 /32 mpg (city/ highway). The high performance E63 AMG is equipped with a 6.2-liter V8 that makes 507 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. The E63 goes from zero to 60 in 4.3 seconds, a feat matched by super sports cars. E-Class models with rear-wheel-drive receive a 7-speed automatic transmission, while the E350 and E550 4Matic models feature a five-speed transmission. The E63 AMG gets Speedshift transmission which allows for faster gear changes.
The E-Class is well accommodated and features a two-tone cabin, with comfortable seats, and wood, leather and chrome accents to add a touch of elegance. The rear seat has room for two adults. Wagons get a rear-facing, two-passenger third-row seat. With the third and second rows folded, cargo volume goes up to 69 cubic feet.
The E320 Bluetec and E350 get similar levels of standard equipment that include, a Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system with a CD changer and auxiliary audio jack, 10-way power front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, power tilt-telescoping steering column and a sunroof. A Sport Package on the E350 comes with 18-inch wheels, sport suspension, tinted glass, and twin tailpipes. The E550 gets the Sport Package plus four-zone automatic climate control, semi-active air suspension and leather upholstery. The E63 AMG gets the same standard equipment as the E550, but upgrades to satellite radio, heated front seats, split-folding rear seats, and other AMG performance and styling features. The E63 AMG gets exclusive adaptive cruise control and an AMG Performance Package that includes a limited-slip differential.
Non-AMG E-Class models get options from Premium Packages such as satellite radio, a navigation system, heated and ventilated front seats, keyless ignition and bi-xenon headlights. The E550 and E350 have an optional AMG Sport Package, available with the Sport Package, which features AMG accents, AMG wheels and auto-manual shift paddles. Stand-alone options include split-folding rear seats, iPod integration, electronic trunk closer, a panorama sunroof and Park Assist.
The 2008 Mercedes-Benz E-Class models come with a sweep of active and passive standard safety features that include front and rear side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, stability control, antilock brakes, and a TeleAid emergency system. A system called PreSafe anticipates a crash and ensures occupant protection. The E-Class sedan earned four stars for frontal impacts and five stars for side impacts in Government crash tests, and the best rating of "Good” in IIHS frontal-offset crash tests.
